Heat kills Phoenix toddler left in car

A 2-year-old child left alone in a car for several hours died of heat-related causes Sunday afternoon, Phoenix police reported.

According to a press release, the child's family arrived home near 35th Avenue and Roeser Road about 2:30 p.m. The 2-year-old, whose name was not released, was found several hours later, possibly by the father, said James Holmes, a spokesman for Phoenix police. Officers were called to the home about 5:30.

Temperatures in Phoenix on Sunday exceeded 100 degrees.

No further details were immediately available.

Baby dies after being left in van for over two hours after church

PHOENIX - A Phoenix toddler is dead after being left in a hot car for over two hours, according to police.

3TV has learned the 23-month-old girl's parents had gone to church with their six children and traveled in two vehicles, one of which was a minivan. They returned home at about 2:30 p.m.

When the dad got inside the minivan to run errands at about 5 p.m. he reportedly found his baby in the back seat.

Police say the family was trying to administer first aid on the child when paramedics arrived at the scene.

The girl was taken to the hospital where she died. Police do suspect her death was caused by heat-related injuries.

A neighbor, who chose not to provide his name, says this case involves a great family. "She's always a nice person. I go to church with her. Everybody keeps on making mistakes, it's just that this one right here is a mistake that you can't bring back that kid."

The neighbor also told 3TV that the child's mother operates a day care center but it is not open on Sundays.
