Pinson 3-year-old died Saturday after he was discovered in vehicle

Three-year-old Marcus Jeffries died after he was found alone in a vehicle Saturday afternoon in south Madison County.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at the 1600 block of Parkburg Road in Pinson at about 4 p.m. Saturday, said Sheriff David Woolfork.
No charges have been filed because the investigation is ongoing, he said.

Marcus' mother, Jennifer Jeffries, and her boyfriend, Scott Baker, were at home when the boy was discovered, Woolfork said.
"The investigation indicates that the boyfriend had gone to the store and the mother was asleep," he said. "The boyfriend came home, found the door to the house open and both began to search in the immediate area for the child. He was later found in a vehicle there at the residence."

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index was 102 degrees Saturday. The weather service issued a heat advisory that began Saturday and continues through Wednesday, warning about extreme heat.

Marcus Jeffries was transported to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead. His body has been sent to the forensic center in Nashville to determine the cause of death, Woolfork said.
Once the autopsy results have been sent, the sheriff's department will submit a report to the Attorney General's office for a recombination, Woolfork said.
